MORAY: center of agricultural research in the time of the Incas
Information
Moray is an archaeological site located in the Maras district to 49.6km from the city of Cusco. It was a center of agricultural research in the time of the Incas, where crop experiments were carried out at different heights, seeking to acclimatize plants from warm climates to colder climates. The arrangement of its platforms produces a gradient of microclimates, having the center of the concentric circular platforms a higher temperature and gradually reducing outwards to lower temperatures, thus being able to simulate up to 20 different types of microclimates.
It is believed that Moray may have served as a model for calculating agricultural production not only in the Sacred Valley but also in different parts of the Inca empire.
Due to their proximity to the Maras salt mines (25 minutes), both places are visited together.
